An Alarming Night

September 8, 2008

We went to DC for my mom’s wedding reception and stayed at a hotel with the kiddos.  It was great at the Embassy Suites because they had an indoor pool and a playroom for the kids.  What a life saver!  Staying in a hotel is always challenging because you realize how much stuff you have that you consider absolutely necessary for survival and then notice that you do not have it with you!  I thought we were doing well on this trip and had no major snafus or major “we forgot this” purchases.   These purchases always cause huge arguments so we were even getting along!

However, we did have a fire alarm that confirms being a mom makes life a lot better, a lot more interesting, and a lot harder.  On Friday night (or I guess Saturday morning) around 2.30 am I woke up with my first bloody nose in years.  Bloody nose is an understatement – this was a gusher! It actually freaked me out because it would not stop bleeding and I had visions of dying in this hotel from a loss of blood.  It was not a pretty sight, and certainly not one I wanted anybody to see.  Then Ross told me that people do die – they choke on it because they fall asleep on thier backs.  Thanks babe – no sleep for me!

At 3 am Miles woke up to eat far earlier than normal.  This was fine because I was clearly up, although busy, and my boobies were strangely very ready for him to eat.  Maybe it was all the excitement…or maybe I am cursed…who knows.  So Miles is happily eating away and I am trying to keep the blood off him when the fire alarm goes off.  It really jarred me and Miles.  Sophia kept sleeping as she always does.  My husband woke up and went in the hallway immediately and there was no one out there yet.  However, the alarm was still sounding so we knew we had to be better safe than sorry.

I detached Miles and he started crying.  I wanted to cry too because my milk started spraying everywhere.  I had to get out of my nightie really quick so I threw on Ross’ t-shirt and my shorts, grabbed the toilet paper I had been shoving up my nose, grabbed baby Miles, and headed for the door.  Ross got Sophie and we headed out.

I did not remember until we were passing the elevators that in a fire one must use the stairs.  Man was I glad we were on the third floor!  We met up with my sister and her 3 year old twins in the hallway and proceeded to get all 4 kids and us down the stairs.  This was scary for the kids.   It might have been my bloody face that scared them but I think it was the stairs that were cold and quickly filling with people.  Going down the three flights was hard – had we been on the 8th and had there been a fire I am not sure we would have made it.  The twins were really upset.  Lily hit her head on the railing and I was having trouble picking her up without dropping Miles.  Ross had Sophia and Katie had Sam but because Lily was right by me I was trying to get her.  It was a total clusterf*%@.  We made it outside – barely - and I realized that I must look ridiculous.

My nose was still bleeding, my breasts were still leaking, and I was toting 2 kids in my arms out of the hotel that had my blood on them.  Yes, people stared.  I would have too.  I am sure I looked like a total nutjob right out of a B horror flick.

After about 45 minutes (yes it seemed to take some people a long freakin’ time to get out) and a check by the fire department we were let back in to go back up the stairs and back to bed.  My bloody nose had finally stopped – I did not die – except of embarassment.

I went back into my room, we put Sophia back to bed, and I fed Miles the rest of his middle of the night snack.  Back to normal, it was just me and Miles up in the middle of the night with other mommies around the world and of course the wackos who lurk in the night.  Why do these things always happen when the girls are out?  Who knows.

At least it was just a false alarm….we had left Sophia’s blanket in the room.  Now THAT would have been a real nightmare.
