Superhero Romance

July 29, 2009

My husband and I are college sweethearts.  We had a lot of fun in college.  We were not always sober when we had this fun.  At some point we were so un-sober that we made up super hero names and stories for each other.  This started (and my memory is somewhat hazy) because we both love the Beatles and we both love and know and can sing all of Rocky Raccoon, the tale of young boy with said name whose lady is taken by a man named Dan and the showdown that ensues.   So we were wandering the streets singing this great song and making up more songs because we love to make up songs and sit on porches and play guitars and sing.

In thinking of verses, I became the lady of the song and I called myself, for lack of a more creative name in the middle of the night, Awesome Girl.  Modest – ha! I then proceeded to name my now husband Horrible Boy. I thought I was funny.

Awesome Girl

As our story unfolded it turns out I was an orphan whose parents were murdered in the woods and I was raised by a pack of wild dogs and learned both to be fierce but also to care for the earth and animals as well as my fellow man (or woman).  God I am amazing huh?  The raised by wild dogs part is not far from the truth.  While my parents tried their best, the four of us kids were in most ways at least this crazy and rough and I was raised in it more than by it…but still.  Returning to the story, when I became a lady and was ready to enter the human world and avenge my parents’ death and save the world from evil, I needed a sidekick.  You see, I had no experience in the real world and so, like all the very best heroes, I needed a partner.  I needed Horrible Boy.

Since my love did not like the name I gave him, he added a descriptive phrase to mine and I ended up being Dog Faced Awesome Girl.  Please note the design your own hero site did not have a dog face available so I chose to be beautiful in my design.  And since my sidekick had to be known to be good his name was amended to Brave Bold Horrible Boy.  It was a crime fighting match made in heaven.   That night we laughed and sang through a couple of fantastic superhero stories before falling asleep.

Like I said, we had a lot of fun in college in a very small town.  There was not a TON to do.  While we did not make up any more verses to the song and I have lost the ones we sang that night (all but the chorus of course) the names stuck.  For a decade and counting I am Awesome Girl.  I signed the cards I left at his house when I drove back to school (he graduated before me) ”AG” and then continued to sign emails that way and then my wedding card to him and since anniversary cards and birthday wishes - all are addressed to my Horrible Boy with Love from his Awesome Girl

While I am quite sure I am not as AWESOME as my name suggests I am also positive that he is more wonderful than you might surmise from his.  We are quite the sidekicks.  Now we have two little sidekicks and one on the way who may need to join the gang a la The Incredibles.

I think we should take out the guitar, give the kids their superhero names (they already have regular and Hebrew names what’s one more?) and start singing about our adventures.  They would love it, and then I can share with them one of the many things that made me love their father.  However, we would risk them telling this story in public and then our covers would be blown and the world (and my already shaky reputation as a sane woman) would again be compromised.

Okay, this is hilarious. Jake and I really enjoy coming up with completely inappropriate and hilarious nicknames for each other. It’s nice to know we’re not the only crazy ones! :)

love your nick names and adventures. more envy, more awe, more love. i wished i could share with anyone the name, yes, one name we each use for the other when we are feeling kind and peaceful. our term of endearment. but nobody in their right mind would understand or appreciate it. sometimes, even i cannot. it is a very sweet sounding acronym for something completely foul that began as a gross joke that we wore out in our first few months of dating. thanks for the flashback. dog face rocks. the fact that he could say and you both knew how harmless and untrue it was coming from him. what is it like to have self esteem?

looking forward to the nicknames for each of your incredible offspring.
