My Wounded Little Man
Tonight did not turn out as planned. My precious boy split his forehead open on the coffee table. Do you see the gash? Turns out I am more mommy than blogger because I did not get a picture of my blood soaked toddler before we rushed out the door. The doctor said to enjoy this look because tomorrow it will look like hell.
The incident happened because of the coffee table that I begged my husband to get rid of when we had kids. He said I was being ridiculous. I now, quite officially and in a very pissed off tone, beg to differ. Those edge guards do not stay on the pointed death trap that is this beast. I knew this would happen to one of my babies.
Deadly Coffee Table
After dinner Sophia begged me to see the new Dora the Explorer movie. which she has not gotten to watch since it aired on Sunday night at 8. Miles heard Dora and perked up right away. He has quite the toddler crush on that chica! The house was a disaster so I thought watching an hour long movie sounded like the perfect idea. I put water in their cups and they scampered up onto the couch to watch their big movie. I went into the kitchen to start cleaning up a whole day’s worth of mess. Yes, I admit, Twitter stole my morning cleaning minutes today!
Not 5 minutes later I heard, “Miles, this is my spot”! Then I heard a thump. Then I heard an ‘Uh-Oh” from Sophia. Then I was running. Then I heard my baby scream and saw him laying in the space between the couch and the going to be burned in my front yard table. I picked him up to cuddle and Sophia strated screaming. When I looked down his whole face on one side was covered with blood. It looked like he was bleeding from one eye. Thank God he was not! But, at this point, both the kids were hysterical.
I was carrying Miles and telling Sophia to grab her shoes as I shoved the dog onto the porch and looked desperately for my cell phone. Phone in hand, we ran out to find a neighbor who could help. As usual for a mid-week and always in a crisis, my husband is travelling. Turns out lots of neighbors were at soccer or something because all we found was one neighbor’s limited English speaking nanny who literally swooned when she saw Miles and my bless her heart nature neighbor who was running to her house for herbal remedies. She was walking her dog when we ran outside. Sophia asked to go to her friend Seanie’s house and it took 10 minutes but they came to the door. I thought I needed help, but my friend looked at Miles head and said we needed to go to the ER. The cut was too long and too deep. So I left Sophie and ran back to the house, still carrying my bleeding giant son and feeling VERY pregnant. I grabbed my keys and we were off.
Not quite. It is pitch black so early now that I r an over Sophia’s brand new birthday scooter. It took another 10 minutes with me laying on the ground on my side to dislodge this from under the car. I cannot even imagine what will happen when she find out tomorrow! Or how sore I will be.
We got to the hospital and the emergency entrance is closed for construction. We went in the main entrance and did the 1o minute walk from one end of the hospital to the other. I was tired and scared and people were staring and saying “Oh My God” and “That Poor Child”. When we finally got to the ER we did not have to wait long. Turns out they do not want a toddler gushing blood to wait in the room with all the kids in masks. Thank GOD! I was able to get some of the blood off his face and he was happy until they had to clean the wound because they have a huge fish tank. He then became hysterical and remained hysterical until all of the doctors and nurses left the room with some ZAP numbing stuff on the wound and we put on Dora. Thank GOD for Dora. Thank God my baby is in love with her, because he smiled again. He said Dora. He cuddled with me and watched her and boots until the doctor came back.
The doctor said “Thank God he calmed down I can now see the whole wound and he has not been touching it . I think we can do DuraBond instead of stitches.”
I have never been so happy to hear anything! While they had to wrap his arms up like a mummy and 2 men had to hold his head perfectly still, Dora and I were able to keep him still and calm long enough for the wound to show that it was clotting and that is was far enough above his eye for the Durabond. WooHoo!
We were able to come h0me fr0m the ER less than 2 hours from the incident. This is a new ER record for me. Again they really run to help those bleeding toddlers. With my blood covered toddler and belly (seriously it is all over our clothes) we trudged back through the whole hospital to our car. Miles said hi to the policeman and smiled. It melted my heart.
We picked up Sophia, who feels so bad and just wanted to hug Miles. She said she wanted to give him a treat. He loves those Bakugan balls that pop open for battle. No, he does not battle he just loves that they pop open and loves pushing them back together. I had a set to give for a birthday and I let Sophia give them to him. He LOVES them. It was late but I let them stay up and roll or throw those balls for 20 minutes. Then we read a book and went to bed.
Now I just need to check on him every few hours for tonight to make sure there are no head injury signs like shortness of breath or vomiting. Fun times!
So – not the post I was expecting. Not the evening I was hoping for. Still, I cannot ask for more than the great service we got at Presbyterian Hospital Main here in Charlotte. They really took care of us and were so sweet to Miles.
Oh wait – I can ask for one two more things…a new white maternity shirt and a NEW DAMN COFFEE TABLE!
p.s. my post today was supposed to be on self-control and obedience in toddlers. Sophia has been having some issues lately with these things…clearly.

Wow. I’m glad Miles is okay. I have a coffee table that I call “the coffee table of baby doom.” When my nephew first started walking, I would follow him around my house and hold my hands out like a little barrier between him and anything he might stumble into, esp that table. (If I lived with him 24/7, I would have developed some serious back problems. lol) I’m pretty sure we’ll move that table into the basement storage area before we have a little one walking around.
That bruise is going to look super nasty tomorrow and the day after, but at least he’ll feel okay and IS okay. What a scary thing to happen.

Poor thing! I’ve had several of those visits to the hospital in my 12 years of motherhood! Not fun! But I’m glad he’s ok! It’s amazing how quickly children bounce back from an accident like that!
Hope he had a restful night!

Oh, hun, I’m so sorry! I totally understand what you mean, we had the most beautiful coffee table that was an work of art, when my oldest was learning how to walk she smacked her head once and I said that was it! And four years later, it is still in the garage, collecting dust!:) Not to worry though, his beautiful little head will be as good as new very very soon!

Oh my GOD! The horror you must have felt seeing your little boy hurt like that! What a crazy scary story… and the hectic-ness of rushing to the hospital. Man, see, this is why parenting more than one child should always be done in pairs! I’m so glad he is okay and that your ER visit was not too long – that’s great! HUGS to you guys!!!

Oh poor kiddo. Something similar happened to my brother when he was a baby and my father got so mad at the coffee table that he threw it off the balcony. When my parents found out I was preggers, my dad demanded getting rid of their beautiful map table due to the sharp edges.
Hope everyone is doing ok.

Ouch! Poor kid.
My husband used to travel all week when the kids were little and why is it that emergencies always happen when they’re gone?
Hope you and Miles are getting some much needed rest.

You poor momma! I have four, yes FOUR glass tables that I am terrified of. And a toddler tornado and spunky baby that love to climb on said glass tables. We wrap them with those long black foam pipe insulators, but they think it is funny to pull them off. I am glad to see the smile on such a sweet face! So resilient aren’t they?

I hope the little guy is feeling better by now. my son needed stitches from the corner of the bar a few years ago. I can’t throw that away though. I wish, it’s very sharp

Isn’t it just awful when they get hurt, and you’re the only one around? My son tends to get hurt when he’s home with me. And of course between me and my husband, I’m the one that panics and can’t think straight in these situations.
